Can you get a repeat pill prescription online?
Yes, you can arrange a repeat supply of your contraceptive pill online. Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, a pharmacist can continue your current pill after a short check that nothing important has changed. It works whether you first got your pill from a GP, a clinic, or another pharmacy.
Do you need a prescription for a repeat supply?
Not in the usual sense. Many people search for a "repeat prescription", but under the NHS service the pharmacist supplies your pill directly under a Patient Group Direction, a legal NHS framework. That means there is no GP prescription to request and nothing to collect separately. The pharmacist checks your suitability and supplies the pill in one step.
How to order your repeat pill online
- Complete a short online consultation confirming your current pill and any changes to your health or medication. No card details needed.
- Speak to a pharmacist, who reviews your answers by phone to make sure your pill is still suitable.
- Discreet delivery in plain packaging within 1 to 3 working days.
Supply is always subject to the pharmacist's assessment. Reorder before you run out so there is no gap in your protection.
What does the pharmacist check at a repeat?
A repeat check is shorter than a first consultation, but it is not skipped. The pharmacist confirms your current pill, asks whether your health, weight, or medication has changed, and for the combined pill checks you have a blood pressure reading from within the last 12 months. This follows the same UK Medical Eligibility Criteria used by GPs and clinics.
Is a repeat pill supply free on the NHS?
Yes. A repeat supply is free through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service, in the same way as your first supply. The consultation, the pill, and the delivery are all free, with no prescription charge and no card details. Contraception is exempt from prescription charges across the UK.
Can I get the same pill I am already on?
Usually, yes. If your current pill still suits you, the pharmacist can continue it. Pills are supplied by active ingredient rather than brand, so for a levonorgestrel combined pill you may receive Microgynon, Rigevidon, or Levest, and for a desogestrel mini pill you may receive Cerelle, Feanolla, or an equivalent. If you would rather change pill, tell the pharmacist, as switching is straightforward to arrange too.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get a repeat pill prescription without seeing a GP?
- Yes. A GPhC-registered pharmacist reviews a short questionnaire and supplies your pill under a Patient Group Direction, so there is no GP appointment and no separate prescription to collect. Supply is always subject to the pharmacist's assessment.
- Can I reorder a pill I first got from my GP or a clinic?
- Yes. You do not need to have started with us. As long as the pharmacist can confirm your current pill is still suitable, they can take over your ongoing supply, whether you first got it from a GP, a sexual health clinic, or another pharmacy.
- Do I still need a blood pressure reading for a repeat combined pill?
- Yes. For the combined pill a blood pressure reading from within the last 12 months is needed at each review, because oestrogen can affect blood pressure. You can use a reading from a pharmacy, GP, or home monitor. The mini pill does not usually need one.
- How much pill can I get at once?
- Your pharmacist provides an ongoing supply and will tell you how much they can give and when a further check is due. You do not need to reorder every month. Reorder before you run out so there is no gap in your protection.
- What if I want to change to a different pill?
- That is a switch rather than a repeat, and it is still something the pharmacist can help with. Tell them at your consultation and they will check whether the new pill is suitable. Our switching guide explains how changing pills works.
- Is a repeat supply free?
- Yes. Through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service the pill, the consultation, and the delivery are all free. There is no prescription charge and no card details are needed.
